The Case of Baturov and Vasilyeva in Vilyuchinsk

Case History

At the end of March 2026, searches were carried out at the homes of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Kamchatka. A criminal case was initiated against Yevgeniya Vasilyeva and Pavel Baturov under an extremist article. Believers were searched and Bibles and electronic equipment were seized. Both signed a recognizance agreement.

    Head of the Investigative Department for the closed administrative-territorial formation of Vilyuchinsk of the Investigative Committee for the Kamchatka Territory, Vladislav Bogdanov, initiated a criminal case against Pavel Baturov and Yevgeniya Vasilyeva. They are suspected of participating in the activity of an extremist organization and involving others — a resident of Vilyuchinsk and other unidentified individuals — in it. According to the ruling, Baturov and Vasilyeva "undertook active actions... expressed in participating in religious events and teaching the religion of Jehovah's Witnesses."

    Major Bogdanov charges Pavel Baturov as a defendant. The investigation considers it unlawful for Baturov to have conducted, together with others, organized training sessions and arranged the viewing of videos via the Internet.
